My great grandfather recieved a phone call from Ireland. He did not answer, his son did. His response was, " What is a 95 year old man going to do with a castle." I wish he would have communicated with family before he gave up a family heirloom!

The castle is now a Tower Once owned by Houstoun family as they made thier fortune in international good exchange. It was sold by Renfrewshire Council for £1 and now is slowly being renovated and will stand for another 500 years
  • Paton's Mill, mokey wrote 15 years ago:
Local vandals have finally got their way and destroyed this unique building with the complicity of the local authority who had been on notice for many years that the building proved an irresistible attraction to the local disaffected youth. It is appalling that this historic building was left to be ravaged over a number of years by the types of ne'er do wells who have targeted it regularly during the period since its closure as a working factory. It was apparently the oldest machine factory in the world - yes the world! Johnstone does not have much left to be proud of and is it any wonder when our council cannot be bothered to exercise any authority to force occupiers of such historic properties to properly maintain and/or secure same. The council should hang its head in shame!

Notorious as the murder scene of Pamela Hastie in 1981 - which led to one of Scotland's most infamous miscarriages of justice, later overturned. Her murderer has still not been brought to justice. There is at least one Polish Paratrooper buried here, who died as a result of an accident during the Second World War.
